Art and Culture in Zante

Without ever losing its Greek identity, Zakynthos, since ancient times, came in contact with several foreign, European populations and got to know different cultures and mentalities.

Zante became a receiver of many cultural influences which then expounded, and as a result contributed in a great extend to the configuration of the Modern Greek spirit.

The influence of all these foreign cultures is obvious, not only in cultural heritage of island, but also in the cultural role the island had into the New Greece, as Zante got to know an important growth and founded important colonies, since the Classic Times.

In Zante were born many important persons, among them our National poet Dionisios Solomos, Andreas Kalvos, Grigorios Xenopoulos and several other important persons for the culture of Greece.
